Think Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is one of the most ambitious games ever made. I don’t mean it is the most ambitious, as you can probably think of games with better narratives, better gameplay, or both. But it’s astounding for a game from 2004, to have an open world of this size, with this much detail and a sandbox that pushes the boundaries of what games can be. Most of my issues I had with GTA 3 and Vice City have been fixed, from dodgy controls to unfair difficulty to characters, to plot. All of these fixes have created a game

That is surprisingly contemporary and even surpasses most of the open world games we have today. But in it’s ambition San Andreas occasionally oversteps the line, with content that should have been to make an arguably better game. Before we start, this is a spoiler warning for San Andreas. If you’re currently playing through the remasters - god help you if you are - then you might want to come back to this review later. So, with that out of the way, let’s talk about the good and the bad, and find out if GTA San Andreas is Still Great today.
In GTA San Andreas we play as Carl Johnson as he returns to Los Santos after five years in Liberty City. Los Santos is a fictional version of Los Angeles in the early 90s, a place that CJ left to escape a life of gang violence. As soon as CJ lands in Los Santos his old life quickly catches up with him as he is apprehended by a group of corrupt cops, two of which make up the games main villains: Officer Tenpenny and Officer Pulaski. Tenpenny and Pulaski frame CJ for murder and blackmail him into doing their ditry work. You might think that this is a good enough plot point to base a game around. We spend the game trying to clear CJs name and seek revenge on Tenpenny and Pulaski. Well, that is a core part of the San Andreas experience and we do eventually get our revenge. But unlike previous GTAs that were one-dimensional we have more on top of this. We have CJs Grove Street gang members double crossing us, CJs older brother going to prison as well as trying to set up businesses to survive in San Andreas away from Grove Street. That’s quite a lot, isn’t it? Well, this isn’t even everything as there are several subplots that I’ll talk about in a minute.
